QUETTA, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif arrived in the provincial capital of Balochistan on Thursday morning for a high-profile visit aimed at accelerating development and addressing the region’s socio-economic grievances. The visit, conducted under a heavy security blanket, includes the inauguration of several strategic infrastructure projects, including new sections of the N-25 highway and the foundation-laying of several “Danish Schools.”

Accompanied by federal ministers and senior officials, the Prime Minister was received at the airport by the Governor and Chief Minister of Balochistan. The visit comes at a time when the federal government is under pressure to improve security in the province while ensuring that the benefits of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) reach local communities.

“Our government is committed to the progress of Balochistan. We believe that development is the only lasting solution to instability. These schools and highways are not just brick and mortar; they are the future of the youth of this province,” PM Shehbaz told a gathering of local elders and officials shortly after his arrival.

The N-25 highway project is considered vital for regional trade, as it connects Quetta to Karachi and onward to the Iranian border. Officials state that the expansion of this road will significantly reduce transit times and accident rates, which have been a significant concern for local transporters. Furthermore, the establishment of five Danish Schools in remote districts aims to provide underprivileged children with an international-standard education.

Security analysts, however, point out that infrastructure development must go hand-in-hand with improved intelligence and local engagement. “While the Prime Minister’s focus on development is commendable, the challenge remains the safe execution of these projects. The recent surge in isolated security incidents in the northern and western districts necessitates a dual approach of development and enhanced surveillance,” noted a Quetta-based security expert.

During his visit, the Prime Minister is also expected to chair a high-level meeting on the provincial security situation. Sources indicate that the discussion will focus on the coordination between federal law enforcement agencies and the provincial police.

The local administration has issued a traffic advisory for the capital, as several major arteries have been cordoned off to facilitate the Prime Minister’s movement. Residents have been urged to cooperate with security personnel, and checkpoints have been established at all entry points to the city.

Political leaders from Balochistan have expressed mixed reactions. While members of the ruling coalition have hailed the visit as a sign of federal commitment, opposition figures have called for more transparency in how provincial resources are utilized. “Inaugurations are good, but we need to see the long-term impact on the lives of the common man,” said a local provincial lawmaker.

As the Prime Minister concludes his day-long visit, the federal government has reiterated its stance that Balochistan’s stability is central to Pakistan’s overall economic health. Further updates on the specific budget allocations for these new projects are expected to be released by the Ministry of Planning later this evening.
